As crime rates fell during the past decade, Americans stubbornly refused to acknowledge the trend. Surveys consistently showed them persisting in the view that crime was on the rise, even as hard data showed the opposite. That’s finally changing. For the first time in the dozen years Gallup has been polling on this subject, a plurality of its respondents(43 percent) believe there’s less crime in the U.S. this year than there was a year earlier.
