NEW YORK @radical.media has been named a finalist in the communications design category of the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Awards, the organization said today.

This is the first time the production company, with offices in New York, Los Angeles, London, Paris, Berlin and Sydney, Australia, has been nominated for the award. The winner will be named at an Oct. 19 gala at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum in New York.

Design is "something that for us is perhaps a little known aspect of the diversity of what we do as a company," said shop co-proprietor Jon Kamen. "But we've had a very strong design team here for a long time, and it's wonderful for their work to be recognized. ... And we're absolutely thrilled to be in such good company."

Other nominees in the communication design category include MTV's in-house promo and design department and Second Story Interactive Studios in Portland, Ore.

Nominees were also named in four other categories, including architecture design, environmental design, fashion design and product design.

Graphic designer Milton Glaser will be honored with a lifetime achievement award at the ceremony. Aveda Corp. of Minneapolis will receive the corporate achievement award.

The National Design Awards were started in 2000 by the White House Millennium Council in an effort to honor design in various disciplines. During the gala on Oct. 19, a design awards patron will also be named.

New York-based R/GA founder Bob Greenberg won the National Design Award in the communications design category last year.
