Given the wailing and lamentation about rush-hour traffic, you’d think Americans spend half their lives getting to work. They don’t. According to an analysis of American Community Survey data newly released by the Census Bureau, the average commute-to-work time in the U.S. is 24.4 minutes. And that figure is skewed upwards by residents of big cities (see the chart). About two-thirds of states have commute-to-work times that are shorter than the national average. If you have your heart set on a short commute, move to North Dakota, where the trip from home to work averages 14.8
