NEW YORK Claria said it ended its distribution agreement with Kazaa two weeks ago, as Microsoft reportedly eyes the adware company as a potential acquisition target.

The decision to stop bundling its pop-up ad serving software with Sharman Networks’ Kazaa file-sharing software came before the U.S. Supreme Court ruled against Grokster and StreamCast Networks last week, according to Scott Eagle, chief marketing officer of Redwood City, Calif.-based Claria. The case was widely viewed as a test of whether file-sharing services are responsible for copyright violations arising from illegally traded music files.
