Bertelsmann AG’s CDnow unit said it has laid off 40 people, or 10% of its staff, in the second such cost-cutting move in recent months.

The online music retailer laid off 40 people from a variety of departments in the company’s Los Angeles office and Fort Washington, Pa., headquarters.

The job cuts are intended to ?improve operational efficiency and manage expenses,? a company spokeswoman said. She added that some reductions also resulted from closer cooperation with BMG Direct, the company’s music club.
