Power and Associates says buyers of such cars are “now more than five time as likely to switch to a sport-utility vehicle than they were two years ago.” Consumers in general have shifted from conventional cars to more truck-like vehicles, but “midsize cars have lost more customers than any other car segment.” This sales trend has accelerated with the emergence of “crossover” vehicles (such as the Lexus RX300 and Ford Escape) that feature “car-like ride and handling along with the versatility and durability of trucks.”
