TORONTO — Canada’s antitrust authority gave the green light Tuesday for publisher Quebecor Inc. to acquire provincial cable giant Groupe Videotron following a bitter takeover battle.

The Competition Bureau said the transaction can go ahead if Quebecor divests itself of the Quatre Saisons (TQS) TV network, as already agreed. “The sale of TQS will ensure that competition in (the television advertising) market remains strong,” senior deputy commissioner of competition Gaston Jorre said. Quebecor late last year said it would sell TQS and retain TVA Group, Quebec’s largest TV network, picked up as part of the deal for parent Videotron.
