LOS ANGELES The California Department of Health Services last week launched a statewide ad campaign encouraging parents to combat childhood obesity by taking an active role in their family’s eating and lifestyle decisions, a department representative said.

The campaign, created by Sacramento, Calif.-based CDHS, the California Nutrition Network for Healthy, Active Families (Network) and independent Swardlick Marketing Group, Portland, Maine, includes the department’s first attempt at issue-oriented advertising, a rep said. In the past, ads have been limited to more general messages about the inclusion of fruits and vegetables in a healthy diet.
