SAN FRANCISCO As part of expanding its planning and strategy department, independent Butler, Shine, Stern & Partners has hired Graham Phillips as associate planning director, an agency representative said today.

Phillips was most recently a planning director at Ogilvy & Mather, where he spent the past six years working on accounts such as Time Warner Cable, DuPont, AT&T Wireless, Miller, SAP and Kodak. Before that, Phillips worked in planning at Anderson & Lembke and Mad Dogs & Englishman.

"Graham is one of the smartest planners around," said Ed Cotton, BSSP's director of account planning. "He is a great addition to the agency and will help us develop fresh strategic thinking in this new communications landscape."

The Sausalito, Calif., agency has new business from tech client Sun Microsystems and other accounts, which makes the expansion necessary, an agency representative said.

At BSSP, Phillips will initially work on the Sun Microsystems account. He will also work with the agency's Influx Strategic Consulting division, which helps brands connect to culture using account planning, anthropology, trend forecasting and creativity to generate ideas.
