A recent TV spot for Long John Silver's Restaurants, which shows a state trooper stealing food from a suspect, has angered some police officers.
The 30-second spot, created by New York-based Jordan, McGrath, Case & Taylor and called "State Trooper" (shown here), shows an opportunistic smokie snatching Long John's food from a motorist whom he has pulled over. The ad ran in Fresno, Calif., and four other markets.
"It's humorous at first, but then it gets to be like a hemorrhoid very irritating." said Larry Bertao, president of the Fresno Police Officers Association.
The spot, which was produced to sell the restaurant's "Grab and Go" sandwiches, shows the officer's transgression being captured on video by his own security camera.
"That's a felony and about the worst possible one he's taking something under the color of authority," added Bertao.
In response, JMC&T copywriter Charlie Hipsher said, "We would comment, but we usually speed and the hemorrhoid remark makes us nervous."
