As employees at Barkley Evergreen & Partners were finalizing plans to purchase the remaining 55 percent of the agency from Bill Fromm, a suggestion was made that something be done to show their appreciation to the shop's founder and chairman.
But having just written Fromm a hefty check, what to do became a bit of a puzzle.
"What do you buy someone like Bill, who can pretty much buy anything he wants?" said agency representative and Employee Stock Ownership Plan trustee Mike Swenson.
The Kansas City, Mo., agency opted to offer something to other people in Fromm's name. The shop has endowed a $25,000 scholarship at the University of Kansas's William White School of Journalism and Mass Communications in nearby Lawrence. Fromm has taught advertising classes at the university and many BE&P staffers are alumni, Swenson said.
"This was a special time and we wanted to take an opportunity to thank him for what he's done for us," said Swenson.
