NEW YORK When BBDO creatives had to communicate the impact of removing color from Masterfood’s M&M’s brand, there was only one cultural reference that clicked: The Wizard of Oz.

In a 30-second TV spot, which broke New Year’s Eve, M&M’s spokescharacters reenact the final black-and-white scene from the movie in which Dorothy recounts her adventures. Dialogue is altered so Dorothy recalls that the candies were all there. “You were blue and you were red and you were yellow,” she says.
