BATES GOES TO BAT FOR KIDS

Bates Southwest has crafted a print ande-mail campaign for the Houston Recycled Baseball Items Foundation, a nonprofit group that collects used equipment for inner-city youth programs.

The Houston agency created three posters featuring graphic representations of balls, bats and gloves. A timeline on each poster helps potential donors remember their first hit and other baseball milestones, then asks them to pass their history on to kids.

The e-mail message, which urges recipients to "quit throwing the ball away and give it to somebody aimed in the right direction," was sent to members of teams participating in the client's celebrity softball game. Direct-mail pieces targeted area businesses.

Last year, the foundation outfitted 43 teams.

The shop scored two 2001 silver Addys for its pro-bono work on behalf of the organization.
