Durk Barnhill, an account director at Saatchi & Saatchi, has been named general manager of the agency's office here.

Barnhill, 35, succeeds Julie Bauer in overseeing daily operations at the shop. Bauer remains president and CEO of Saatchi's San Francisco office, but has also been named to a managing partnership that covers Saatchi offices in New York, Northern California and Canada. She will be based in New York.

In a statement, Barnhill praised the efforts of his predecessor and said he is committed to building the agency's reputation in the Bay Area.

For her part, Bauer credited Barnhill with helping the agency land a number of new accounts—most notably the $20 million Barclays Global Investors business, picked up in 1999. She said his new-business savvy was key in the decision.

"Durk has just the right combination of strategic insight, enthusiasm and energy," Bauer said. "He has a top-notch agency résumé and brings with him a wealth of diversified client experience."

From 1997 to 1999, Barnhill was a management supervisor at Fallon in Minneapolis, working on the $150 million Miller Lite account.

Prior to Fallon, Barnhill was an account director at Campbell Mithun Esty, also in Minneapolis, where he worked on clients including US West Communications, Healthy Choice Frozen Foods and Betty Crocker.

In her new position, Bauer will oversee media, interactive marketing and new business. She will also maintain overall responsibility for the San Francisco office.

Saatchi's network includes 152 offices in 92 countries handling annual billings of more than $7 billion. The San Francisco office works with such clients as Procter & Gamble, the recently acquired Informix business and The San Jose Mercury News. The shop has been active in new-business pitches recently.
