APL Makes Direct Investment

With its acquisition of Columbian Advertising, Ammirati Puris Lintas has made its biggest expansion in the Chicago market since coming here 18 months
ago to handle creative duties for Ameritech.
Columbian specializes in direct and promotional marketing, and claims billings of $60 million under the leadership of Bernie Miller III, son of the agency's founder.
The shop will operate as APL/Columbian and, in addition to its own clients, will work on aspects of the Ameritech business that fall within its specialties. APL had been handling Ameritech's direct marketing out of New York, but will now move that business to Chicago, APL Chicago president Brad Brinegar said.
Overseeing APL Chicago's expanded direct operation will be Peter Steinhauser, named executive vice president and director of integrated marketing services.
Steinhauser, like Brinegar and co-creative director Jon Moore before him, comes from Leo Burnett, where he was senior vice president and managing director of the direct marketing group.
APL opened its office here after winning creative duties on Ameritech's $100 million account in July 1997.
