American Stores Halts Review

American Stores Co. last week put its short-lived review on hold following
the announcement that Boise, Idaho-based Albertson's intends to acquire the company.
American Stores representative Judie Decker confirmed that the search for an agency to handle the supermarket chain's Lucky, Sav-on and combination store operations has been postponed. American Stores must now await "regulatory approval" of the Albertson's deal, Decker said, before the review can resume. That approval isn't expected until after the first of the year, she said.
After the acquisition is completed, American Stores, based in Salt Lake City, will put together "task forces" to determine what might work best for the merged company, Decker said.
Grey Advertising's Los Angeles office has the Lucky account, while Lois/EJL's Chicago office handles ads for the Sav-on chain. Billings for the two accounts total an estimated $50 million. Albertson's estimated $20 million advertising business is handled by Duncan & Associates in Santa Monica, Calif.
