Mullen/LHC’s win of the consolidated $60-75 million Wachovia-First Union Bank account gives the shop a challenge it may be inherently qualified to meet: how to blend the advertising of two former rivals into a seamless entity.

The Winston-Salem, N.C., affiliate of Interpublic Group’s Mullen in Wenham, Mass., beat Publicis & Hal Riney, San Francisco, in a shootout between the roster agencies. The two shops had been six-year incumbents on the Charlotte, N.C.-based accounts of Wachovia Bank and First Union, respectively, before the merger last year of the financial institutions.
