Though ex-smokers now outnumber smokers in the U.S., many of the latter find themselves unable to join the ranks of the former. A Mintel poll finds that two-thirds of those who regularly smoke have tried and failed to quit, including 40 percent who have made more than four unsuccessful attempts. Among people who have managed to kick the habit, just 8 percent relied on a nicotine-replacement product. Overall, 21 percent of would-be quitters have used a nicotine patch and 16 percent have used nicotine gum.
