Brands that hope to tap into people’s economic optimism will have a hard time finding it. In a Los Angeles Times/Bloomberg poll fielded in the middle of August (i.e., after gas prices had already been falling for a month), just 28 percent of respondents said they think the economy will be better six months hence. Twenty-one percent think it’ll be worse, while most of the rest said it’ll be “about the same.”

Upper-income people have fallen prey to the gloom, though less so than low-incomers.
