DALLAS Wal-Mart said it has launched an internal search to succeed Robert Connolly as evp of marketing.

Connolly, 61, today said he would retire at the end of the year.

Connolly joined Wal-Mart in 1989 as vp and merchandise manager when the company was led by founder Sam Walton. He played a key role during the 1990s in crafting public relations efforts to help counter claims of unfair employment and buying practices.

Connolly left Wal-Mart in 1994 for an evp post at Montgomery Ward, but he returned two years later.
