Travelers Group Puts Corporate Image Account on the Block

NEW YORK-Travelers Group has begun an agency review for its corporate ad account, which is currently handled by SSC&M.
SSC&M here, which has handled the estimated $10 million corporate creative and media account since March 1995, also has responsibility for the Travelers insurance account. The insurance business, which got $2 million in ad support last year, according to Competitive Media Reporting, is not in review.
"During the course of doing business, we re-evaluate our vendor relationships," said Gordon Andrew, a representative at the New York-based holding company, confirming the review.
Five agencies in New York and Los Angeles will be selected soon to present credentials and speculative creative work to the client in mid-September. A decision is expected by the end of October.
"We don't know at this point if SSC&M will defend the account," said Andrew. Executives at SSC&M could not be reached.
Travelers Group is the parent of five different divisions: Travelers Life & Annuity, Travelers Property Casualty, Primerica, Commercial Credit and Smith Barney. Smith Barney is the only division that receives significant ad support. Its $25 million account is currently at McCann-Erickson in New York.
Sources said that McCann is participating in the corporate review in an attempt to expand its Travelers business. Agency executives declined to comment. -with Michael McCarthy
