Leo Tarkovsky is the new president of McCann HumanCare, joining the specialized consumer health unit of McCann Health from JWT New York.
At the WPP agency, he was most recently director of business strategy for healthcare, a position he held for the last seven years. Tarkovsky has more than 20 years working with healthcare brands including Procter & Gamble, Johnson & Johnson, Pfizer, Bristol Myers Squibb, AstraZeneca and Sanofi-Aventis. He was also chief strategy officer at WPP Team Chemistry, a cross-functional unit set up by JWT parent WPP to work on J&J’s pharmaceutical business.
The role of president is new at McCann HumanCare but Tarkovsky takes over for Andrew Schirmer, formerly managing director of the unit's operations in North America. HumanCare, with offices in London, Frankfurt, Milan, Shanghai, Tokyo, Sao Paulo and Sydney, draws upon the resources of McCann Erickson and McCann Worldgroup in bridging the practices of healthcare and consumer marketing.
Tarkovsky’s mandate includes broadening McCann HumanCare’s positioning to include new DTC, OTC and Rx-to-OTC capabilities, and he is also charged with adding consumer health data and analytics. HumanCare clients include Novartis, Merck, Boehringer-Ingelheim, Eli Lilly, GSK, KOWA, Lundbeck and Takeda.
In addressing Tarkovsky’s appointment, John Cahill, global CEO of McCann Health, cited the dramatic changes in the healthcare industry and opportunities born of newly empowered health consumers. “Technology is at the center of this evolution and our work over the last five years has put us in a good place to capitalize on these market developments. Leo will bring fresh thinking and an excellent pedigree in the life sciences to lead the charge for us.”
