Along with all the inessentials Americans are foregoing in their sudden zeal to economize, alarming numbers of them are cutting back on spending that’s decidedly not a luxury. Polling conducted last month for the Kaiser Family Foundation found 53 percent of respondents saying their household has cut back on healthcare during the past 12 months due to concern about its cost.

Thirty-five percent said that, at some point during this period, they’ve relied on home remedies or over-the-counter drugs instead of going to a doctor.
