Nothing like a recession (or near-recession) to bring out Americans’ eat-the-rich impulses. A Gallup poll finds 51 percent of respondents agreeing that the government “should redistribute wealth by heavy taxes on the rich.”

Perhaps hoping not to be loaded into tumbrels and hauled to the guillotine, 46 percent of those in the $75,000-plus income cohort agreed. So did 54 percent of the $30,000-74,999 cohort and 56 percent of those with income under $30,000.

Leaving aside the issue of taxation, just 27 percent of respondents think “the distribution of money and wealth in this country today is fair.”
