Car makers are pioneers in budding medium as new technology gains credence

Even in the crowded halls that held last month’s New York Auto Show, attendees with personal digital assistants did not have to wait on line for brochures at the General Motors exhibit in order to get information on the cars.

Beaming stations let car lovers gather information on those models electronically on the spot, without having to lug home a bag’s worth of brochures. And in the past year or so, users of Palm Pilots, Visors, Blackberries and other PDAs have seen banner ads for or downloaded information on new Volvo, Toyota, Honda, Jeep, Lincoln and Mercedes-Benz models.

While there are an estimated 20 million PDA users in the U.S.
