Obama Set to Nominate New FTC Commissioner

Joshua Wright will be one of two from the GOP

President Obama intends to nominate Joshua Wright to serve as a commissioner at the Federal Trade Commission. Wright is currently a professor of law at George Mason University School of Law, as well as the research director and a member of the board of directors of the International Center for Law and Economics. He'll replace Thomas Rosch, whose seven-year term expires this month.

Wright will be one of two Republicans serving on the five-member commission, which by law can have no more than three commissioners from the same party. The other GOP commissioner, Maureen Ohlhausen, was sworn in this past April.

An antitrust expert and scholar, Wright holds both a Ph.D. in economics and a J.D. If the Senate confirms him, he will be the fourth economist to serve as an FTC commissioner and the first J.D./Ph.D.

As a commissioner of the agency responsible for antitrust and consumer protection, Rosch will be dealing with the FTC's crackdown on deceptive advertising—especially overhyped health claims—and online privacy issues, including Do Not Track initiatives, the update of the rules for the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act and the agency's open investigation into Google's search practices.
