Information Resources Inc. and the Nielsen Co. have formed a joint venture to process consumer purchase data from a common set of households.

The venture announced today means the companies will conduct competing research and analysis based on a common panel of consumers. A panel identifies factors such as who is buying, where and how often. It also gauges the level of brand and retailer loyalty, as well as the impact of shopper promotions.

The arrangement aims to reduce costs for both companies.

The shared panel of households, established using Nielsen’s household sample and data acquisition infrastructure, will be owned by the 50/50 joint venture.
