Two rivals in consumer panel research, Information Resources Inc. and The Nielsen Co., have formed a joint venture to recruit, maintain and process consumer purchase data from a common set of households.

The venture announced Tuesday (Aug. 25) means the companies will conduct competing research and analysis based on a common panel of consumers. The panels identify such things as who is buying, where and how often. They also gauge the level of brand and retailer loyalty, as well as the impact of shopper promotions.
