JWT has recruited McCann Worldgroup’s Gustavo Martinez to become global president and succeed Bob Jeffrey as CEO.

Martinez, who was president of Europe and Asia at Worldgroup, will join JWT in February, according to the agency. In 2015, he’ll rise to global CEO as Jeffrey shifts to non-executive chairman.

Jeffrey, 60, is among the longest-standing CEOs of a creative agency, having assumed the top job in early 2004. The WPP Group shop’s primary accounts include Ford, Shell and Johnson & Johnson.

Jeffrey’s predecessor, Peter Schweitzer, handpicked Jeffrey to succeed him in late 2003. Before that, Jeffrey—a driven, disciplined and thoughtful leader—was North American CEO and president of the shop’s New York headquarters. He joined the agency in 1998.

Martinez, 50, has worked at Worldgroup since 2011. Before that, he spent a decade at Ogilvy & Mather, where he held a series of regional roles before rising to global business director.

“He is passionate about the business, devoted to clients and understands that the key asset of the business is the caring, nurturing and understanding of its people,” Jeffrey said, by way of announcing the appointment. “Gustavo Martinez is the future of JWT.”

Looking back on his own tenure, Jeffrey added, “I love JWT—the brands, the clients and most importantly, the people.”

The agency employs nearly 10,000 staffers at 200 offices in 90 countries.
