Kohl’s Department Stores is pursuing solar energy, Energy Star and LEED certification in both current store locations and in new construction, along with recycling and carbon emission reduction efforts.

The discount store is second in retail and eighth among Fortune 500 companies on the Environmental Protection Agency’s list of green power purchasers, buying more than 20 percent renewable energy last year, reaching a goal the company set for 2008.

More than 200 store locations nationwide hold the EPA’s Energy Star label for superior energy efficiency.
