Donino, White & Partners has been named agency of record for Web host Interland's estimated $20 million account.
The move came without a review and at the expense of Turner Fernandez Turner, which won creative duties on the account after an agency search last year. The incumbent was not invited to defend.
DW&P will also handle media, which had been done in-house.
"We went straight to [DW&P] for their Internet branding experience," explained Ken Gavranovic, president and chief executive officer of Interland. "We didn't even talk to any other agencies. [DW&P] has a good reputation in the industry, and I personally know many Internet companies they've helped make successful. We needed a strategically driven agency that could make sure our budget was invested with impact and efficiency. After our very first meeting, I knew they were the ones to take us where we need to go."
Agency president and chief executive officer Frank Donino said it sounded to him like a done deal before his shop even had a chance to present.
"They had thoroughly checked us out even before we walked through the door," Donino said. "When we finished our presentation, [Gavranovic] said, 'Look, I've already called around and I've heard you're the best. We need the best and we need it right now. When can you get started?' "
An Interland marketing executive said the quality of the Atlanta incumbent's creative work was not the reason for the agency switch.
"Turner Fernandez Turner are very creative . . . They're visionaries, and I have nothing bad to say about them," said Stephanie Critchfield, Interland's marketing vice president. "It's just they were growing so fast that they couldn't focus on our company as much as we had hoped."
Critchfield said Atlanta-based Interland was impressed by DW&P's work for MCI WorldCom's UUNet. The shop showed how it helped the online service provider for businesses make the transition to a major company, she said.
Interland, the second significant Internet account to partner with DW&P in the last three weeks, puts the agency over $100 million in annual billings. Earlier this month, the technology branding specialists in Atlanta won the account of small business supersite BrightLane.com, another estimated $20 million account. K
