The Home Depot acknowledged today that its payment system suffered a security breach that has apparently exposed credit card data since April, though the retailer noted that personal identification numbers (PINs) were not stolen.

The extent of the breach—in terms of the number of consumers affected—hasn't been revealed, but the Atlanta-based company said it entailed credit cards used in stores in the United States and Canada. Home Depot first hinted that security trouble may be afoot last Tuesday when it announced an investigation that  involved law enforcement, banks and security specialists.
