The son of Hollywood director Mark Rydell is entering advertising.
Alexander Rydell developed a taste for directing ads after winning three contests in an amateur competition run by Poptent—a website that connects marketers with filmmakers. Through Poptent, Rydell created speculative ads for Zippo lighters, Brother printers, and Pizza Hut.
Pizza Hut bought Rydell's ad—for $10,000—and ran it, beginning in June. The spot, which promotes a special offer for the chain's "Lover's" pizzas, features men, women, and kids shouting "I love you" to the camera.
The 25-year-old Rydell, who has yet to secure representation, grew up in Marina del Rey, Calif., and now lives in Santa Monica. So what did his dad, who directed On Golden Pond (for which he was nominated for an Academy Award), The Rose, and The River, teach him about directing?
"Treat everybody with kindness," Rydell said. "We don't really talk so much about the technical part of directing or even so much what our different tastes are. We just talk about a philosophy around being a paternal figure to people and how to get the best work out of people."
