NEW YORK Google released updates to its video and local search engines, as the company continues to introduce innovations to keep ahead of rivals Yahoo and Microsoft.

Google Video now has a playback option, letting users watch user-submitted videos on the site. Google developed its own in-site video technology rather than choosing from the two dominant industry players, Microsoft and RealNetworks. Google Video is still in test form and does not carry advertising.

Thanks to the increasing prevalence of broadband connections in homes, Google, Yahoo, AOL and fledgling search engines like Blinkx.tv
