Fear of identity theft continues to prey on Americans, particularly when it comes to shopping online. In polling late last month by Rasmussen Reports, 16 percent of respondents said they have been victims of identity theft — 17 percent of the men and 14 percent of the women. Eleven percent of those polled said they have had their credit-card information “stolen online.”

This helps explain why many people are wary of using their credit cards to make purchases online.
