Deutsch Back on J&J Roster With Acuvue

Past client connections at Johnson & Johnson paid off for Deutsch as it picked up Acuvue from corporate Interpublic sibling McCann Health.

Ashley McEvoy, who was named company group chairman of Johnson & Johnson Vision Care in 2012, had worked with Deutsch on Tylenol when she was president at J&J’s McNeil Consumer Healthcare, sources said. The shift returns Deutsch to J&J’s client roster after working on Tylenol for seven years until 2010. (McEvoy left her McNeil role in December of 2008.) There was no agency review in the current shuffle.

While Deutsch becomes the creative lead on the contact lens brand, McCann Health will service Acuvue in certain global markets where U.S.-based Deutsch has no presence. Europe and Asia are big and growing markets for the prescription product.

For McCann, Acuvue was its last piece of J&J, having lost the bulk of its business in 2007 when the marketer moved McCann brands like Band-Aid, Reach, Monistat and K-Y to other roster shops.

Reps at McCann and Deutsch declined to comment, referring calls to the client.

Acuvue is handled by J&J’s Medical Devices and Diagnostics division. J&J has made changes among top execs in its consumer operations recently but sources said that was not a factor in this shift: In August, Lynn Pendergrass joined as worldwide J&J chairman while this month Alison Lewis, who has yet to start her job, was named global chief marketing officer.
