While a bum knee will keep him off the golf course for some time, Tiger Woods can have the satisfaction of knowing he's Americans' favorite sports star. A Harris Poll asked adults to identify their favorite sports star. Michael Jordan ran second to Woods, despite having not played an NBA game since 2003. Brett Favre, who may or may not have retired from the National Football League, came in third, with basketball's Kobe Bryant and auto racing's Jeff Gordon filling out the top five.
The poll also complied rankings for respondents' favorite female sports stars. Auto racer Danica Patrick led this list, with tennis star Serena Williams as runner-up, one slot ahead of her sister Venus. Maria Sharapova finished fourth, and soccer's Mia Hamm completed the female top five. Despite all their snide remarks about women drivers, men gave Danica Patrick the most votes in the female rankings. Women gave the greatest number of their votes to Serena Williams.
