Pew Internet and American Life Project raised plenty of eyebrows in September with research showing that 24 percent of Americans use Twitter or similar status-updating services.

After redoing the questioning to focus on Twitter itself, Pew found that 8 percent of the U.S. is tweeting.

The researcher also found that Twitter skews to a younger, urban demographic and, interestingly, is twice as popular among African Americans and Hispanics as it is with whites. Fourteen percent of 18-29-year-olds said they used Twitter versus 7 percent of those 30-49, 6 percent of those 50-64 and 4 percent of respondents over 65.
