Viggle and Dan Marino launch second screen app for NFL Playoffs

By Natan Edelsburg

In September we wrote about Viggle’s launch of the MyGuy app, their foray into social TV fantasy football. This playoff season, Viggle has partnered with Hall of Fame quarterback Dan Marino to launch the MyGuy Playoff Football Challenge.

According to Marino, MyGuy – as opposed to standard fantasy formats – “rewards you for actually watching the game live and making changes based on what is happening on the field – in real time… No more sitting by as your star player gets injured or is having a bad game. You can sub him out just like the coaches do.” A nationwide leader board will track results weekly, with one Grand Prize winner getting a trip for two to this year’s Super Bowl in New Orleans, Louisiana. Runner-up prizes include Marino-signed memorabilia.

The app market is becoming increasingly crowded with second screen sports apps, which makes sense since sports is, by a large margin, the genre that drives the most social conversation. Partnering with Marino through the end of the 2014 season will be a huge boon for Viggle and MyGuy in the wake of the fallen through merger with GetGlue and as they try to surpass and differentiate themselves from other apps within the space.
