Updated Smart IR App Lets TV Viewers Toss All Those Remotes

By Jordan Chariton

The Android’s updated Smart IR Remote is making traditional living room remotes more obsolete, giving TV watchers the ability to toss away the frustration of using multiple TV remotes by giving them control with one phone app.

The universal remote can control your set-top box, TV set, and DVD player, and works through Infrared Blasters already installed in Android phones and tablets. It allows users the ability to program more than 500,000 supported devices.

A cool new feature is “air gestures,” which allows users a mere wave of the hand over their phone to adjust volume or change the channel. And don’t worry about the app interfering with your calls: the Smart Remote instantly mutes when you receive a call.
