TWC SportsNet Launches Second Screen App for Lakers Games

By Adam Flomenbaum

Los_Angeles_LakersWith two-thirds of mobile device and tablet owners interacting with a second screen while viewing TV, networks are focusing more resources on developing standalone apps for individual shows and events. Sports fans are the most active second screen users, and it was only a matter of time before regional sports networks began creating companion apps for fans to use while watching a team’s games.

Lakers fans will be among the first beneficiaries of such an app. Time Warner Cable SportsNet has recently launched an updated version of “TWC SportsNet,” which will be powered by Mobovivo’s StayTuned platform and Simply New’s creative and content team. The app will provide viewers with exclusive, real-time content during live Lakers games and will include both the pregame and postgame shows on the network. For more on what type of content will be available on the app, its social features, and how Lakers fans will benefit, we spoke with Mark Shuken, SVP/GM of Time Warner Cable Sports Regional Networks.

Lost Remote: What type of content will be available to users?

Mark Shuken: The updated “TWC SportsNet” app provides second screen users with exclusive, real-time content during live Lakers games and all pre- and post-game shows. That content includes interviews, behind-the-scenes content, instant replays, interactive prompts, player and game facts, poll questions, game stats, scores from around the NBA and live Twitter chatter about the Los Angeles Lakers.

LR: What are the social features of the app?

Shuken: Fans using the app can follow Twitter chatter around the game and share social media messages directly from the app. For example, they can tweet out a highlight that the app has just showed them or post to Facebook about a poll question the app asks.

LR: Do you have app-specific advertisers that have signed on or is this a value-add for linear advertisers?

Shuken: We are looking at this as a value-add for linear advertisers.

LR: Why do you think that Lakers fans will benefit from the app?

Shuken: Our app gives Lakers fans yet another way to stay directly connected to the team. It gives them real-time updates and content and makes their fan experience even deeper, which is what our networks are all about. We’ve learned through our linear product on Time Warner Cable SportsNet, which includes live games and extensive non-game programming like pre- and post-game shows and behind-the-scenes programs, that Lakers fans just can’t get enough news and updates about their favorite team. We love being one-stop shopping for Lakers fans and helping them connected to the Lakers on every level.
