5th Annual Shorty Awards Honor Best of Twitter, Facebook, Foursquare, YouTube, Tumblr and Rest of the Social Web

Winners Include Jimmy Kimmel, Michelle Obama, George Takei, Selena Gomez, Justin Bieber, One Direction

New York City (April 9, 2013) — The Shorty Awards recognized the best of social media last night, with celebrities, industry professionals, and special guests in attendance at the TimesCenter and a global audience watching via Livestream.

Online and TV star Felicia Day (@FeliciaDay) hosted the celebration, which kicked off with a video message from former Shorty winner Mayor Michael Bloomberg (@MikeBloomberg).

The Shorty Awards limit acceptance speeches to 140 characters — the maximum length of a tweet — and the results were a fast-paced show with as many fun speeches and videos it could stuff into a 90-minute show.

First Lady Michelle Obama (@FLOTUS) received the #GIFStar Special Shorty Award for appearing in many popular animated GIFs that have helped bring awareness to her Let’s Move! campaign to fight childhood obesity. She tweeted her acceptance speech: https://twitter.com/FLOTUS/status/321443155473989633

“Thank you @shortyawards! Being a #GIFStar is about getting active. Hula hoop, #momdance & @letsmove to help our kids grow up healthy! -mo”

Selena Gomez (@SelenaGomez) received the Celebrity Fashion award and tied with Tara Strong (@TaraStrong) for Best Actress. Justin Bieber (@JustinBieber) won the Celebrity award and One Direction (@OneDirection) won the Band award.

Jimmy Kimmel (@JimmyKimmel) accepted his Lifetime Achievement Award with a video featuring some of the many kids across the country who have turned his videos into viral sensations: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vy4n2uNBUOI

George Takei (@GeorgeTakei) received the Distinguished Achievement in Internet Culture Award: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SK_DUW7N830

The viral political sensation Texts From Hillary (textsfromhillary.com) won Tumblr of the Year and “Kiss Me in Paris,” Jamie Beck and Kevin Burg’s creation for Ann Street Studio, won Animated GIF presented by A&E Duck Dynasty. When it played on the theater screen, the GIF became the world’s largest as determined by RecordSetter.

“I can’t believe we’re still sending press releases,” said Sawhorse Media CEO and Shorty Awards co-creator Gregory Galant (@Gregory). “Why don’t we just announce all of this with a GIF?”

Supermodel and The Face mentor Coco Rocha (@CocoRocha), comedian and Nerdist founder Chris Hardwick (@nerdist), comedian Hannibal Buress (@hannibalburess), VH1 Big Morning Buzz Live host Carrie Keagan (@carriekeagan), actor James Urbaniak (@JamesUrbaniak), Miss Teen USA Logan West (@MissTeenUSA) and actor Kristian Nairn (@KristianNairn) also presented awards.

Shorty finalists were determined by the public, who voted via Twitter. The Real-Time Academy of Short Form Arts & Sciences, comprised of leaders in technology, journalism, business and culture, then selected the winner.
