Some of social TV’s biggest shows were honored today at the 73rd annual Peabody Awards ceremony, and Lost Remote was there to talk with some of the stars.
ABC’s “Scandal” won an award, and we caught up two of the show’s biggest stars, Tony Goldwyn (President Fitzgerald Grant) and Jeff Perry (Chief of Staff Cyrus Beene).
“When we started…Jeff and I were ‘Twitt-iots,” Goldwyn joked to Lost Remote, with Perry noting he went from “Pony Express to tweeting.”
From the beginning, “Kerry [Washington] and Shonda [Rhimes] said we really want to get on Twitter,” Goldwyn told us, adding that the entire staff made a commitment to livetweet when the show aired.
“It made our fans, who immediately loved the show, feel enfranchised in a way, and to feel that they were apart of something, that they had ownership over the show, and had a direct line to us…which they do. And that just grew exponentially.”
And platforms like Twitter are the perfect complement to a show like Scandal, Perry says.
“We could tell from episode one that the show was going to be dependent on many things, but some of its delirious fun was going to be seven ‘OMG’ plot twists per episode, and that invites real-time viewing even more than DVR viewing.”
Goldwyn and Perry’s comments echo their colleague Joshua Malina, who told Lost Remote earlier this year that the cast made an early decision to “be there” for fans on social media.
Netflix’s “House of Cards” and “Orange Is the New Black” also won Peabody Awards (more Peabody Awards coverage with interviews with those shows’ stars tomorrow).
