Social TV interactions skyrocketed 171% this year

By Cory Bergman

And that’s a conservative estimate, according to annual numbers Trendrr provided Lost Remote. So far this year, there have been over 350 million social conversations and interactions around TV. Compared to last year, that’s a 171% growth rate, Trendrr says. (The actual number is up 487%, but Trendrr adjusted it down to account for things it began tracking this year, such as new social services like Viggle and some sporting events.) Here’s the graph for the first half of this year:

Trendrr also provided a summary of June’s social TV activity in its whitepaper:

– 81M+ social interactions were recorded from the 5.5K telecasts which were tracked last month. This is the highest level of social activity for any month to date since we began tracking. It’s also a 681% increase in social activity from June 2011, and a 15% increase from May 2012.

– Cable social activity in June grew by 45% from May with 55M social interactions. Broadcast on the other hand shrank by -18% from May to June (May was when the majority of finales happened).

– Cable generated social activity accounts for 68% of all activity in June as opposed to 55% in May.

– ABC, fueled by more than 13.5 million social interactions around the NBA Finals, was by far the most engaging broadcast network this month. Even without the impressive boost from the Heat/Thunder showdown, ABC places ahead of the rest in a strong month of social activity.
