Social Scoreboard: January 1

By Adam Flomenbaum

When posting Nielsen’s daily Twitter TV Ratings chart, we skip sports in favor of series and specials. January 1 is an exception, and the #1 show on the series and special chart says it all: ‘Ridiculousness.’ MTV’s long-running web video show received a mere 8,000 tweets yesterday by 5,000 unique authors. Why? Because January 1 is one of the best sports days of the year, especially now with with the college football playoffs in place.

2,564,000 tweets by 799,000 unique authors were sent about the Rose Bowl, which featured Florida State and Oregon (and the potential #1 and #2 picks in the 2015 NFL Draft). The storyline there may have been better, but the Allstate Sugar Bowl, which resulted in Ohio State upsetting Alabama (and 1,931,000 tweets by 648,000 unique authors), was a better game.

The NHL’s 2015 Winter Classic, which we wrote about yesterday, rounded out the top 5 with 159,000 tweets by 70,000 unique authors. While last year’s game tied for the highest rated regular season game in NHL history, yesterday’s game was the lowest-rated Winter Classic to date.
