Sheerios, Bey Hive Prep for VMAs

By Karen Fratti

Voting closes tomorrow for the 2015 VMAs so legions of fans can finally stop spamming social media. Viewers are able to vote up to ten times a day, which means there are Nick Jonas fans who have done that, every day since voting opened. MTV’s always been good at adopting technology to make the VMAs interactive and anytime there are teenagers, it can get a little spammy. Remember TRL? But voting for your favorite daily video or Video of the Year using a dial-up connection is a very different beast than the social voting of late.

The enthusiasm coming from fans is intense, but the stock “I voted for…” badges and links back to the voting page are far from engaging. MTV’s launched on Kik to allow fans to “chat with them” about the VMAs, and you can create your own promo image of GIF from the site. It’s a one way street. Sure the Bey Hive asks for nothing in return, but what’s the end game here?

There should be ticket giveaways, free music and video downloads, calls to action to shop or earn swag if you’re up and setting alarms to get in your ten votes a day for Ed Sheeran. While there are more outlets than ever and ways to gather the various hives with mobile apps and great graphics, it all still feels very AOL chatroom.
