‘Sharknado: The Second One’ to premiere next July, Syfy announces

After receiving more than 5,000 Twitter submissions to name the Sharknado sequel, SyFy announced today that it will be called, “Sharknado: The Second One.” The movie, set in New York, will premiere next July.

“Since Twitter played such a huge role in the success of the original movie, we wanted to use that platform to ask our fans to name Sharknado 2,” said Thomas Vitale, EVP Programming/Original Movies for Syfy. “This response is another reminder of how Sharknado has become a pop culture phenomenon. We want to thank all our viewers for their wonderful contributions to keeping up the shark-mentum.”

While Sharknado’s theater debut didn’t generate millions, it helped keep that “shark-mentum” going. And of course, it doesn’t hurt that Shark Week is in full swing and a shark was discovered on the NY subway.

“The fact that sharks are becoming an industry trend right now is great for our Shark Week programming, our Shark Week product at retail and overall awareness and conservation for the species, which is a big priority at Discovery Channel,” said Elizabeth Bakacs, VP of Licensing for the Discovery Channel. “Consumer products are one way for us to reach the Shark Week audience year round with everything from Shark Apps and a Sharkopedia book to ‘I heart Snuffy’ t-shirts and Shark Week cupcakes.”

To to be outdone, official Sharknado merchandise is coming just in time for Halloween, from costumes to bags, posters and other accessories.

Time will tell if all this shark craziness will last until next year, but given Shark Week’s long run, it’s a good bet to make.
