Season 3 Premiere of FX’s ‘The Americans’ Drives Little, But Telling, Twitter Reaction

By Adam Flomenbaum

Season 3 of FX’s hit show ‘The Americans’ returned this week, and while it is not the most social of TV shows (even though it placed fourth on Wednesday’s Nielsen Twitter TV Ratings chart with a unique audience of 683,000, only 7,000 tweets were sent about the show) the Twitter conversation that did occur was telling.

According to our analytics partners Canvs – the first completely syndicated qualitative social TV platform – 2,455 of 7,118 tweets about the show were emotional reactions. 56% of the emotional reactions included the word “love” and 16% included “good.” The show drove the most emotional reactions when Elizabeth narrowly escaped capture by the FBI.

This week, we looked at at how people felt about the ‘The American’s’ nostalgic 80s style in the graphic, but I also wanted to call out how people responded to the stars of the show:
– Kerri Russell was mentioned in 2.5% of reactions, and 46% of those expressed love. Russell also had the most popular hair: 10% of reactions to her mentioned her hair or wigs.
– Matthew Rhys accounted for 2% of reactions. An impressive 80% of reactions to Rhys expressed love. Many reacted to a quote from Rhys saying he’d like to see his character defect from the KGB.
– Frank Langella, who joined the cast this season, was mentioned in 1.5% of reactions. Twitter users were happy to see him: more than 20% of reactions mentioning Langella said he was a good addition to the cast.
