Nickelodeon’s The Legend of Korra is making Tumblr history again with its innovative use of the platform. From Comic-Con to a Shorty Industry Award nod, the network has continued to find creative ways to not only set precedents on platforms, but to actually release linear content. Tonight, Nickelodeon just released the season finale of the show after over 20,000 Tumblr reblogs took place from fans to unlock the episode.
Only fourteen hours ago, Nickelodeon released this post on Tumblr. With a video from the voice actress of the main character the network told fans that if the post received over 10,000 reblogs the finale would be released on Nick.com at midnight EST. The 10,000 mark was not only hit extremely fast, but the post currently has nearly 22,000 reblogs. Fans can now tune into Nick.com to watch the finale.
Very few TV brands have released full episodes as a result of fan engagement on Tumblr. Nick is sure to set the precedent in how others treat this uber-fan platform.
