News Corp introduces 'The Daily' for iPad

By Steve Safran

UPDATE: “The Daily,” the first national digital-only “newspaper” launched today, following a press conference with News Corp, the paper’s publisher, and Apple. “The Daily” It will sell for 99 cents a week or $40 a year and is available on the iTunes Apps section. It will publish 365 days a year. Apple is playing a key role in the release of “The Daily,” finally allowing in-app purchases. (When I checked into iTunes this morning, it had a new Terms and Conditions on this very point.) Some other features:

  • There will be over 100 pages of content
  • Ability to update content throughout the day
  • The Daily will span the usual range of topics: news, life, entertainment, sports
  • Original 360 panoramas, interactive charts
  • Ability to share articles via Facebook and Twitter
  • Localization of weather, sports, other content
  • And yes – soduku

Will this be a success? At this morning’s announcement, Rupert Murdoch said “Our ambitions are high, our costs are low.” Clearly, he is taking advantage of the relatively low barrier to entry.
